Copper Theft May Have Led To New Bedford Home Explosion

NEW BEDFORD (CBS) – A New Bedford man is hospitalized with burns to his face, after he cut the wrong pipe, while allegedly trying to steal copper pipes from a home.

Kevin Livramento, 46, was allegedly in the basement of an unoccupied home on Richmond St. Monday morning when the explosion occurred.

"I heard a loud noise, and I ran outside, not knowing what it was," said Bob DaSilva, who lives next door,"and I see the whole side of the house is bowed out, and it's knocked off the foundation."

Another neighbor looked out and saw a familiar face, furiously pedaling a bicycle down the street. "His name in Kevin, and he lives on Highland Street," said the homeowner.

A short time later, police arrested Kevin Livramento at his apartment.

The home he had broken into was unoccupied, because the elderly owner died several weeks ago.
