DA Looks For Links Between Bombing Suspect And 2011 Waltham Murder

WALTHAM (CBS) — Does one of the alleged Boston Marathon bombers have a connection with an unsolved triple murder from 2011?

Investigators are looking into it.

On September, 11, 2011, three young men were murdered in a Waltham apartment. Their throats were slashed, and their bodies reportedly sprinkled with marijuana. No one has been arrested for the crime.

As it turns out, one of the victims, Brendan Mess, was friends with Tamerlan Tsarnaev. They worked out together.

But now, some are wondering if Tsarnaev's discontent with western lifestyles, and his adoption of fundamentalist Islam, may have led him to a confrontation with his friends.

The Middlesex District Attorney's office would not be specific today, saying only, "The 2011 triple homicide in Waltham remains an active and ongoing investigation. We continue to follow all leads, and will review any new information that may come to light as a result of the investigation into alleged Boston Marathon bombing suspect."

Investigators are currently only questioning Tamerlan's younger brother Dzhokhar about the Boston Marathon bombings, but somewhere down the line it's expected they'll be asking him about the Waltham murders as well.
