Phantom Gourmet: Chocolate-Covered Pretzel Taste Test

BOSTON (CBS) - Phantom recently purchased four bags of chocolate covered pretzels at a local supermarket.

The salty-sweet contenders were Flipz, Rold Gold, Snyder's Of Hanover and Utz.

All of these chocolate-y twists fared well in Phantom's taste test, but only one could end up at the top of the food chain.

Utz finished in last place.

These chocolate 'flavored' pretzels come in a small bag with a small price tag and providing that you usually get what you pay for, they're also a bit lacking when it comes to taste.

While these treats were plenty sweet, the absence of cocoa butter in the coating left them tasting like a snack without a soul.

A step up from there is Flipz.

This brand comes in a resealable package, just in case you're not going to eat the entire bag in one sitting. Made with milk chocolate, they're certainly serviceable when you're having a snack attack. But the weak chocolate is over-matched by some serious saltiness that left Phantom unsatisfied.

The runner-up in Rold Gold.

These big, thick Bavarian twists were something Phantom could really sink his teeth into.

Coated in dark fudge, the rich chocolate flavor of these treats really comes through. Each bite starts with a slight crunch that gives way to a softness that some might find appealing, but Phantom found a bit underwhelming.

At the top of the food chain is Snyder's of Hanover.

Dipped in Hershey's milk chocolate, this brand hits all the right notes.

The pretzels have plenty of crunch and saltiness and the chocolate coating is generously thick, combining into a well-balanced snack that can cure any craving.

That's why Snyder's of Hanover pretzel dips are at the top of the food chain.
