Boston Children's Museum Celebrating 100th Birthday

BOSTON (CBS)  - Children who visit Boston Children's Museum aren't in front of a TV or computer screen and they're not competing in youth sports.

For its 100th birthday, the museum stays young by focusing on the "power of play."

"When people come to the museum with their kids," says President Carole Charnow. " They really pause and play with them."

Charnow knows it's as important for small children as milk.

"They say 'play is the work of childhood,'" Charnow said. "It sure is, and we here at the children's museum talk about the power of play to help children develop their creativity, their imagination, and a lifelong love of learning."

The Grullon family from Brockton love bringing 5-year-old Jovannie.

"It's the best thing for kids - he's a high energy kid, so by the time we get out of here he's going to be super tired," his dad Luis says.

What was Jovannie's favorite part?

"Staying here to have fun," he says.

Popular with older kids, Blue Man Group will be "Making Waves" in their show through May.

"I just like how they do things, their acts and stuff," fifth grader Daniel Nikylin of Brookline said.

There will be educational events for kids of all ages and for this centennial, WBZ President and General Manager Mark Lund was on hand because WBZ-TV will be the museum's official centennial media partner, so we'll be bringing you more fun throughout the year.

In the coming months, there will be a family fest and a huge birthday party for the museum this summer.
