Gloucester Fire Chief Eric Smith said the home did not have working smoke detectors and they were alerted to the fire by a neighbor.

When firefighters arrived, the fire had spread to the entire one-story home, Smith said.

Cold and icy conditions also made fighting the fire difficult, Smith said.

The State Fire Marshal and State Police are investigating the cause of the fire. Smith said the home is a total loss.

Police are not releasing the identity of the victim but did say the victim is an adult.

"This the seventh fire death so far this year. I urge everyone to use caution to prevent fires during this extreme weather," State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan said. "Make sure smoke alarms are working and keep a 3-foot circle of safety around heating appliances free of anything that catch fire."
