Board Game Convention Rolls Into Northern Essex Community College

HAVERHILL (CBS) - Do you remember playing Monopoly or any other board game?

Northern Essex Community College is hosting a board game convention Tuesday. But unlike the game of Monopoly, you won't need cash to participate.

It's free to the public.

The college says even though technology may have made board games less popular, the old rainy day activity is a great way to network.

Since 2011, the college has seen an increase in attendance in its board game club and monthly game nights.

People from the Merrimack Valley up to Rye, N.H. have attended the game nights even though they may not be associated with the college.

"You get social interaction, mental stimulation," Mike Cross, assistant chemistry professor and club advisor said. "They want to unplug. Everyone is online, they have their phones, they have everything and they want to get away from that."

Cross, who met his wife while playing a board game at a party, says the games can be an ice breaker to meet new people.

At Tuesday's convention, there will be hundreds of different board games to learn and play as well as tournaments.

The focus will be on games you may not have ever heard of like "Zombiecide,"  "Dominion" or "Sumo Ham Slam."
