Wilfork Fined $30K For Unnecessary Roughness Vs. Jaguars

BOSTON (CBS) -  Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork is a little lighter in the wallet as the New Year approaches.

Wilfork was fined $30,000 by the NFL on Friday for unnecessary roughness during New England's Week 16 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The foul occurred early in the fourth quarter, when Patrick Chung picked off Jacksonville quarterback Chad Henne for his first interception of the game. Wilfork struck Jags offensive lineman Steve Vallos in the head with his forearm, and was assessed an unnecessary roughness penalty.

Wilfork said after the win he was sticking up for teammate Trevor Scott, who Vallos hit from behind on the play.

"That was protecting my teammate, plain and simple," he told reporters after the game. "You're not going to sit right in front of me and take a cheap shot at my guy with me standing behind you, that won't fly. Plain and simple."
