Is Santa Republican Or Democrat? New Poll Asks Americans' Opinion Of Holidays

BOSTON (CBS) – It turns out that Santa Claus is a Democrat, at least according to 44 percent of Americans. That's compared to 28 percent who say he's a Republican.

A new Public Policy Polling survey asked voters questions like that, and whether Santa was likely to bring presents to Mitt Romney or President Obama this year.

Sixty-three percent of people said Romney would be getting presents, while 51 percent said the president was on the "nice list." Neither president fared very well compared to respondents. Eighty percent of poll participants put themselves on the "nice list."

If Grandma got run over by a reindeer, only 24 percent of people would press charges. Of those, 33% of Democrats would press charges compared to 19% of Republicans.

When it comes to current events, it seems Americans are worried the looming "fiscal cliff" could affect that jolly old elf because 54% said they were concerned the cliff could cause Santa to cut back.

But can you be on the "nice list" if you keep a secret?

When asked if respondents would tell if they saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus, 43% would tell Daddy, 40% would not and 17% were not quite sure.

Only 32% of respondents could correctly identify the number of days in Hanukkah, compared to 18% each who thought it was 7 days or 12 days.

And while they may not know when Hanukkah is, 62% of Americas say their favorite part of the holidays is spending time with family.

"I'm sure Santa will be happy to know that the majority of Americans believe in him," said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. "Now he just needs to give everyone a Hanukkah calendar in their stocking this year."
