Franklin Park Zoo Asks Public's Help To Name New Baby Giraffe

BOSTON (CBS) - A baby giraffe was recently born at the Franklin Park Zoo and zoo officials are asking the public's help to name it.

The female giraffe was born on Nov. 27, and weighs 165 pounds and stands at 6'5" tall.

To celebrate the new addition, the zoo is offing a Baby Giraffe Zoodoption. Those who pledge $20 to $1,000 as part of the Zoodoption, will be sent a photo of their adopted animal and invited to submit their name for the baby.

Names may also be submitted at Franklin Park Zoo's admission booth or via mail at "Baby Giraffe" c/o Franklin Park Zoo, One Franklin Park Road, Boston, MA 02121.

The person who submits the winning name, will be invited to visit the new baby and her parents Beau and Jana. The name will be announced at the beginning of February.

The proceeds from Zoodoption support the care and enrichment of the animals at Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo.

"We are so thrilled to share the exciting news of this incredible birth," said John Linehan, Zoo New England President and CEO. "Jana is an experienced mother and she is doing everything a mother giraffe should do. As with any new birth, we are continuing to monitor the mother and baby closely. So far, everything is going smoothly and we couldn't be happier."

This is the fourth baby for Beau and Jana.
