Steve Wynn Eyes Everett As Possible Casino Site

EVERETT (CBS) – Gambling on the Mystic River. That's what the Mayor of Everett may have in mind as he prepares to take Vegas mogul Steve Wynn for a tour of a vacant plot on the east side of the city this week.

"I am looking forward to seeing what proposal Wynn Resorts presents for the development of a resort in the City of Everett," says Mayor Carlo DeMaria Jr. "I am excited to see how Wynn's vision for this site may complement my vision for the future of the Everett."

Wynn had teamed up with Patriots owner Bob Kraft to pitch a casino resort in Foxboro, but pulled out in May after overwhelming opposition from residents there. Now six months later and 35 miles north, Wynn is setting his sites on the Everett plot where the Monsanto Chemical plant once stood.

City officials say they've had interest from several other developers, including Hard Rock, which is also wants to build a casino.

They would have to compete for the region's one and only casino license. Caesar's Entertainment and Suffolk Downs have already applied for one. If Wynn is interested, he has until January 15th to get in the first phase of the application. The Chief of Staff for Everett's Mayor says it would then go to a city-wide vote to find out where residents stand.
