NH Trick-Or-Treater Given Pill Packaged As Hershey's Kiss

BEDFORD, N.H. (CBS) - Who put a pill into a trick-or-treater's candy basket Halloween night?

Bedford Police believe it came from either the River Glen Condos or Kensington Apartments where the 6-year-old girl who found the pill had been trick-or-treating.

It's the same neighborhood where Lelah Olender lives and where she took her two kids trick-or-treating Wednesday night.

"I went through my kids candy when we got home twice," said Olender. "Everybody here seems really nice, but I guess not."

The pill was wrapped in foil, perhaps to look like a Hershey's Kiss. Police say the girl who found it did not eat it, and showed it to her parents right away.

"This is the type of thing that we saw many years ago that was more prevalent and now it apparently has cropped up again, so we're very concerned," said Bedford Police Chief John Bryfonski.

People who live in the two complexes off of Technology Drive say it's a critical reminder to inspect your children's candy after trick-or-treating.

"It's like a prank and it's not a good prank," said Nimisha Sakpal who lives in the neighborhood and took her son trick-or-treating there last night.

So far, only one parent has reported finding the mysterious pill.

"It's frustrating, it's scary, it's almost like you want to scream and cry at the same time," said Olender.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what kind of pill was in the foil.

They are waiting on a chemist's report but they believe it could be a dietary supplement.

Charges against the person who handed out the pill could include anything ranging from disorderly conduct to child endangerment, police said.
