UMass Hospital System Announces Job Cuts
WORCESTER (AP) — The UMass Memorial Health Care hospital system plans to eliminate 140 full-time positions as it seeks to find $80 million in cuts and new revenue for the fiscal year that starts in October.
President and Chief Executive John O'Brien called the cuts "unpleasant" after announcing them in a in a letter to employees Tuesday.
The layoffs will include nursing staff and cuts at the system's medical center, medical group and corporate areas including fiscal, information services, marketing and communications. In addition, some beds will be cut, management functions will be consolidated and some leased facilities will be pared.
The cuts come on top of 150 layoffs at the five-hospital system in the spring.
The Massachusetts Nurses Association said the cuts would compromise patient care.
The system employs about 13,200 people.
