Theater Shooting Renews Gun Control Debate

BOSTON (CBS) - John Rosenthal of Stop Handgun Violence finds it mind-boggling that guns are not subject to more federal regulation.

"There are national consumer protection standards for every product that a manufacturer makes in the United States, except one," says Rosenthal. "The real gun, that results in 150 people shot a day and 83 killed a day."

Jim Wallace of the Gun Owner's Action League says it would have made no difference.

"If you look at really what this guy had in his apartment and in his car, the gun laws wouldn't have had any effect on those items and they could've been far more destructive," says Wallace.

Efforts to add more regulation are not expected to move forward as leaders in both political parties have called only for enforcement of existing laws.
