Cape Cod Beach Reopened After Shark Sighting

NAUSET (CBS) - A popular Cape Cod beach was reopened on Sunday, one day after it had to be closed because of a shark sighting.

A kayaker spotted the 14-foot great white shark about 20 yards from offshore at Nauset Beach in Orleans on Saturday afternoon.

The harbormaster cleared the beach after sending two boats out to confirm the sighting.

Shelly Negrotti, who snapped the photo of the shark, says people were trying to warn him from shore.

"It was just like a chain reaction up and down the beach. We were all saying 'Get in!' to the paddler as the shark was getting closer and closer," said Negrotti.

Sharks have been turning up in greater numbers off the Cape in recent years because of all the seals that have migrated there.

Seals are a favorite food of great whites.
