Wrong-Way Driver May Face Charges In Wareham Dad's Death

WAREHAM (CBS) - A man accused of driving the wrong way on I-495 and causing a fatal accident over the weekend has not been charged yet in the incident.

Phendy Pamphile, 26, remains in fair condition at Rhode Island Hospital with a leg injury.

"The State Police investigation to determine what charges are appropriate is ongoing," State Police spokesperson Dave Procopio said in a statement.

Police aren't sure why Pamphile was driving the wrong way on the highway on Saturday night when he hit a car driven by 43-year-old Christopher Elicier head-on between exits 1 and 2.

Elicier was pronounced dead at the scene, hours before Father's Day. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

Pamphile's mother told WBZ-TV she believes her son must have made a mistake. She claimed her son doesn't drink or use drugs.
