License Plate Left At Scene Of Fatal Hit-And-Run On Cape Leads To Arrest

BARNSTABLE (CBS) – A young woman has been charged with a hit-and-run that left a bicyclist dead on the Cape early Thursday morning.

Police say Sheila Moretta and her friend were riding their bikes home from work on Route 28 when Moretta was hit by a car.

The driver stopped briefly, but left the scene.

Police were called and Moretta was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital, where she died.

The driver's license plate was left at the scene. Officers said they later tracked down the driver at about 3:30 a.m. on Main Street in Falmouth.

Twenty-two-year-old Angelica Barroso of West Yarmouth was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Police say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Barroso told police she thought she had hit an animal.

She is being held on $2,500 cash bail.
