Middleton Inmate Allegedly Holds Teacher Hostage For Brief Time

MIDDLETON (CBS) - An inmate at the Middleton House of Corrections briefly held a teacher hostage on Tuesday morning.

Police said William Goddard held the male teacher against his will at around 8:30 a.m. for about 15 minutes before hostage negotiators were able to end the incident peacefully.

The teacher was not injured.

Goddard allegedly had a mental issue. Police said he was convinced that his girlfriend was at the facility or being held in basement or in his cell, so he went after the teacher.

Goddard will be arraigned on charges including hostage taking, assault and battery and kidnapping on Wednesday in Salem District Court.
