BOSTON (CBS) - One of the largest digital game conventions in the country opens in Boston Friday.

Pax East is at the Boston Convention Center through Sunday.

Jim Rooney, the Executive Director of the Convention Center Authority, says the event is sold out and more than 70,000 people are expected to attend.

"Everyone who is involved in the industry will be in Boston this weekend," he says.

PAX, which stands for Penny Arcade Expo, was launched in Seattle in 2004.

I asked Rooney if it would be impossible to stage PAX East here in Boston without the convention center.

It first came to Boston in 2010 at the Hynes but the crowds were so huge they had to shut off the escalators.

"In the first year we could tell it was just too big for the Hynes," says Rooney.

"Without the new convention center being here we could not host the event, it would be somewhere else in the eastern United States."
