Top Travel Destinations Of 2012

BOSTON (CBS) - Anne Banas of SmarterTravel.com in Charlestown says the Summer Olympics is making England one of the hottest destinations this year.

The country has spent seven years and millions of dollars sprucing up its capital for the games, but that's not the only British celebration this year. There's also a new football museum opening in Manchester and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

Also on the hot destination list this year: Los Angeles.

Upgrades to LAX airport will make travel easier and in addition to the traditional tourist spots there's a new 16 acre park in downtown L.A.

Relaxed travel restrictions made Cuba a SmarterTravel destination to watch in 2012. Educational and religious groups can go to Cuba under certain circumstances and more airlines will be able to fly charter flights there.

If you love flowers, try the Netherlands for their grand flower exhibition that only happens once every ten years and runs from April until October.

If you'd rather look to the sky for spectacular sights, try northern destinations. NASA has promised an exceptional year for the northern lights this year. So if you've ever thought about going to places like Finland, Iceland or Alaska, this might be the year to go.

2012 may also bring good news for anyone who's always wanted to go to Hawaii. Discount carrier Southwest Airlines hopes to expand it's fleet to offer service to the islands at a competitive rate.
