Former Avon Assessor Fined For Raising Taxes Of Officials Who Fired Her

AVON (CBS) - The state Ethics Commission has slapped a $5,000 fine on the former assistant assessor in Avon, saying she took revenge out on two town officials who fired her.

Marjorie Malone retaliated against the town treasurer and select chair by improperly raising their property assessment, causing an increase in their taxes.

According to The Enterprise, Malone was fired last year for a matter involving a personal expense report.

The assessment changes increased the annual property taxes for each property by $1,452 and $835.

Town Administrator Mike McCue calls it an unfortunate situation, but one that is difficult to prevent from happening again, especially in a small town.

"A lot of our departments are one people departments," he says. "There really isn't anything we can do above trying to vet people out when we hire them."

Malone has paid the $5,000 fine.
