Over the weekend, nearly 30 anonymous donors came in to help pay off other people's layaway accounts, a trend that has been spreading at Kmart stores around the country.
WBZ-TV's Paul Burton reports
"People come into the store as Secret Santas, donating probably close to around $2,000-to-$3,000 for various layaways," assistant manager David Cooper told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 Monday.
"They just want to help people out that are in need this year with the economy. They happened to have some extra money and just want to get into the gift-giving season."
Cooper said some donors have made $50 and $60 payments to various layaways.
One paid off the account of a woman who was struggling to make layaway payments on her children's Christmas toys.
Cooper said it's heartwarming to see people doing good deeds around the holidays.
