Boston To Look At Health Vs. School Performance
BOSTON (AP) — Boston city and public school officials are set to gather for a meeting on how bad health affects student performance.
Charles Basch, professor of health education at Columbia University Teachers College, will be the keynote speaker.
He authored a recent study that indicated that healthier students are better learners.
According to the study, student performance is negatively affected by things including asthma, lack of sufficient physical activity, skipping breakfast and hyperactivity.
The student groups most affected by poor health include blacks, Latinos and low-income students living in urban areas.
City officials say Tuesday's meeting will identify opportunities to help eliminate health issues that create academic achievement gaps among students.
