SUV Crashes Into Saugus River, Young Woman Killed, Driver Hurt

LYNN (CBS) – A young woman was killed when an SUV plunged into a river near the Lynn-Saugus line early Monday morning.

The 1999 Mercedes was heading south on Route 107 just after 1 a.m. when the driver lost control, went through a guardrail on the Fox Hill Bridge and into the Saugus River below.

Four Lynn police officers jumped into the cold river and pulled the driver, 60-year-old Gerardo Brito of Dorchester, out of the SUV.

Police performed CPR on him on the dock and he survived. Brito was rushed to Brigham and Women's Hospital in critical condition.

Despite the efforts of dozens of police and firefighters, a female passenger trapped inside was not able to be rescued in time and she did not survive.

The woman, who is in her late 20's, has not been identified while police notify her next of kin.

At this point, police say there is no indication speed or alcohol was a factor.

According to surveillance video, the SUV had been stopped at a light a short distance away just before the crash.

WBZ-TV's Karen Anderson contributed to this report.
