MBTA Reducing Service During Severe Winter Weather

BOSTON (CBS) - The MBTA is taking a new approach to severe winter storms. They're planning to cut back service.

The T has posted the new plan on its website explaining what riders can expect.

The MBTA says cold and moderate snow throughout the winter will not affect operating schedules. But, during severe storms, they will operate at reduced levels, which would mean less frequent service.

The MBTA says they typically see a drop in ridership on snow days. In response, they will run about 23% fewer trains on those days.

The T says it will still be fully staffed on those days. That will allow them to move quicker to rectify problems like snow build-up, switch conditions and downed trees.

Back-up commuter trains will be stationed in several different spots. Those trains will be used as 'rescue trains' in case of a breakdown.

The T has set up a winter weather information page on its website with information on how the new plan could affect each route.
