Historic Bell Donated To Old South Meeting House

BOSTON (CBS) - Silent since 1876, the Old South Meeting House has its voice back.

Sunday afternoon one of Paul Revere's bells was hoisted by a crane to the historic clock tower.

The revelry that accompanied the moment included a bell chorus, children's choir, and a speech by Mayor Menino.

WBZ-TV's Alana Gomez reports

The bell was cast in 1801. In 1849 it was bought by the First Baptist Church of Westborough. When the church closed down four years ago the bell needed a new home. The Storrow family purchased the bell this summer and gave it as a gift to the Old South Meeting House.

The 876-pound bell is now the third of Paul Revere's on the Freedom Trail. The other two are at King's Chapel and the Paul Revere House.

It will take about three weeks to connect the bell to the clock tower. It will then ring every hour on the hour.
