BOSTON (CBS) – President Obama used the story of a Boston teacher to push his jobs bill Thursday, even though the teacher has a job.

At the beginning of his White House news conference, President Obama told a story of how he recently met Robert Baroz of Wellesley, an English teacher in the city.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Lana Jones reports.

WBZ-TV’s Jack Williams reports

“I had a chance to meet a young man named Robert Baroz. He’s an English teacher in Boston who came to the White House a few weeks ago. He’s got two decades of teaching experience. He’s got a Master’s Degree. He’s got an outstanding track record of helping his students make huge gains in reading and writing,” the president said.

“In the last few years, he’s received three pink slips because of budget cuts. Why wouldn’t we want to pass a bill that puts somebody like Robert back in the classroom teaching our kids?”

But, Baroz is working in the Boston Public Schools this year as a middle school English teacher.

“I’ve managed to land on my feet, but it’s sometimes at the last minute,” said Baroz, who is endorsing the President’s jobs bill.

He told aides to President Obama that others have not been so lucky in finding a job. He did not meet directly with the President.

“Everybody knows somebody who is a teacher who is not working, or has been impacted. They might be taking on more responsibilities. Their classes might have become larger,” said Baroz. “It becomes more demanding for them to meet the needs of the diversity of the children.”

He’s employed through a U.S. Department of Education teaching fellowship.

On the D.O.E.’s web site, he writes that he’s also employed part-time as an English instructor at Mass Bay Community College.

In recent years he’s been a provisional teacher in the Boston Public Schools serving as a literacy coach and an instructional coach.  However, he was automatically let go at the end of each term.

Baroz says that, over 22 years, he has taught in every grade level from fifth through 12th, in settings from urban to suburban to rural.

Obama does this stuff way too often and nobody seems to care.

Recently, Obama went to a bridge that’s not in disrepair to talk about crumbling bridges. And before that, Oama went to a business that shipped half it’s jobs to Costa Rica to talk about creating American jobs.

King Barry has no clothes on, but most of the media is going out of it’s way to ignore tfact that he’s naked.

    1. Judy Taylor says:

Yes! He’s wearing no clothes and David Brooks was “a sap” for Obama because of the crease in Obama’s trousers. The entire lame-stream media is delusional.

It seems B.O.’s “people” need to vet things better. Thanks JustAGuy for the comment about the Emperor’s New Clothes-HE’S NAKED! Was he absent the day they taught that in 5th. grade, or is English an “elective” class in Indonesia?

  12. George Johnson says:

There’s dozens of reasons NOT to pass “his bill” and no GOOD reasons to pass it.

For starters, he is the president, he does NOT WRITE BILLS.
NOTHING he is going to do, is going to create jobs. He’s had THREE years, and has only LOST jobs. Even after spending about FIVE TRILLION dollars. So why is another half a trillion going to do anything?
The “bill” is just more of the same. Payback for his unions and slush funds for dimocrats.

But you wait, the closer we get, and the more obvious it becomes they’re gonna lose big time, the worse it’s gonna get. They know about about to lose power, big time, and won’t be able to get anything for quite some time. The failure of liberalism is on full display. And to put a stop to it, they’re gonna get really bad. Wall Street is nothing. It’s going to get really bad, because they are NOT going to go quietly. They saw this as their last chance. And they BLEW IT. BIG TIME.

I agree. Obama gets angry with modest questions he does not like. And he has the personality of a vindictive person. When he loses the 2012 election unless he suspends the election, which I believe is likely, he will throw a series of temper tantrums that put the Nation at risk – foreign and domestic.
When cornered in the Bunker in Berlin, and it was apparent Germany had lost the war, Hitler railed against the German military and citizens and said they were unworthy to live. He wanted to destroy everything.
Underneath the smile, Obama has the same fragile mentality and thus is dangerous. I am not sure anyone in Washington is prepared to thwart him, because we believe the a change of administrations is done decently and in order.
However, recall that when he won in 2008, he pulled out a sign – “Office of the President Elect/” That was a signal to me to watch this man as his ego is large and any rejection will be met with explosive behavior. Just watch. I hope the U.S. Military does not have to remove the Obamas from the White House or countermand an order to use nuclear weapons.

  13. James - Longdrycreek Ranch - Texas Panhandle says:

Obama has trouble with details. He has lied so long and so often before he became President it is impossible for him to remember the truth. He is a pathetic case. He must have lied his way from birth to now and finds truth to be a strange land.

  23. Jim says:

Many States require that the teacher is provided notice of non-retension before the fall start. Many do so in May. It is a legal procedure, otherwise, if no notice issues, then they cannot refuse rehire at last minute. California has done this for years (Educ Code) The teacher’s association (read union) prevented last minute dumping. It is similar to WARN. So thus teacher will get notices of potential non rehire every year in a public school district as will all teachers. Obama has the worse supporting staff, who do not do homework. It is embrassing. Just like incompatable DVDs (NTSC) to Queen Elizabeth to play on her PAL machine. Just like waiting to read legislation the first time after it is law, Nancy Pelosi style of Senate. America totally dumbed down from the top to the bottom.

The fact is we are spending more and more on schools, and getting less and less. When I went to school in the 60s and 70s, we had 25-30 kids/class, no half days, walked up to a mile to school because the bus only picked up those more than a mile away, and no teacher’s assistants. Today, schools are spending more on less, such as pretty instead of functional buildings, and teaching things they shouldn’t be, like moral values and sensitivity.

Get the schools BACK to teaching, leave the moral lessons to the parents, and make it the parent’s responsibility for Johnny to learn. Stop punishing the high achievers by lowering standards. Someone has to work at McDonalds and Circle K, if Johnny doesn’t want to work to learn, it might as well be him.

IF this were a “true” story, the ONLY answer would be to reform education, throw the child-hating,self-interest unions to the curb and keep the best, most-effective teachers on board. Buy no, the unions will never let this happen. They refuse to better the system because they only care about themselves.

IF what Obama said were true – “He’s got an outstanding track record of helping his students make huge gains in reading and writing” – which most-likely is total BS as are all of his “examples,” the best and brightest have no future in teaching unless they are fortunate enough to get a gig with a charter school, where they really do make a difference.

So my dear president, blow it our your shorts.

As for Obama’s question about whether we really want people like this unemployed … the answer is an emphatic NO. Unfortunately, due to Teachers Unions we have a glut of underperforming paycheck collectors. I would GLADLY trade in one of those jokers for a top performing, well educated, professional teacher. Our kids deserve that. Unfortunately, until you change tenure rules we will never give our kids the best education possible.

He needs the teachers union to go door to door for him, as the foot soldiers of his campaign. Isn’t this what they always do for Democrats.

So he has to pay them off now! You don’t think a Union is going to do something for nothing!

  51. Very Concerned American says:

The more I hear the lies, the more I feel this is a social experiment to see if a man can head a country, do whatever he wants to gain power, and then lie about his intentions and what he has really done. Having the main stream media in your pocket is the perfect storm. We all know he is lying, but the American people as a whole are watching “so you think you can dance” or Jersey Shores. They are not watching FOX, listening to Rush Limbaugh, reading these news clips. The mainstream media have assured them, that these sources only tell lies and are racist. The same people elected Obama because he was cool. The President should be a credible, honest man. He should have experience in running some sort of operation, and he should be the ultimate American with no radical ties to terrorists or racists. He should be fully vetted and we should know everything about him, and not a President who has hidden his past all the way back to grade school. Obama is not to blame, the American people are. They allowed him to be voted in, because he was cool and did cocaine once. My only hope is that information becomes more accessible to people more often through the internet and TV. I don’t know how to wake people up before it’s too late.

Mr President, cities and towns across the America are struggling. One of the main reasons is they can’t keep up with the pension payments and life time health care for retirees for union employees. (teachers)

    1. blackbear1 says:

I guess I should have taught for 30 years for nothing. The only reason there are unions is because of poor leadership(administration) and politics by school committees and administration. I am not, nor ever was a strong union supporter, however without them teachers would be like target holders in a gun range.

Of course providiing they can put up with todays brats.
