Tattoo Artists From All Over Attend Boston Tattoo Convention

BOSTON (CBS) - More than 160 tattoo artists from all over the world are in town this weekend.

The annual Tattoo Convention kicked off Friday afternoon at the Boston Sheraton.

Artists have come from as far away as Japan, are setting up temporary shops inside the ballroom.

They're given four-day licenses by the Boston Public Health Commission.

These are the best of the best artists that you would want to get a tattoo (from)," said Tom Plant from the BPHC. "The commission wants to say get a safe, legal tattoo, not at a tattoo party at someone's house. That's very unsafe."

Event Producer Natan Alexander says the convention is also about educating the public about the art.

"The message is simply that tattoos are art. Tattoos are fine art," Natan told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Bernice Corpuz. "They're one of the most challenging and rewarding mediums you could work in as an artist."
