Boston High-Rise Mattress-Sprinkler Accident Could Cost $750K

BOSTON (CBS) - The damage at a Boston luxury high-rise caused by a freak accident involving a mattress and a sprinkler is expected to cost as much as $750,000, according to Boston fire officials.

Firefighters say on Thursday, a man driving his car into the basement garage of the complex on Nassau Street had a mattress strapped to the roof of his car, which sheared off a sprinkler head.

That charged the building's sprinkler system and caused a sprinkler head on the roof to burst. That sprinkler ran for an hour, soaking several condos below.

On Friday, Electricians were going through the building turning the power back on for residents while inspectors assessed the damage.

"Most of the damage is in the apartments, a couple units affected, and most of the water came down the stairs, affected the drywall," said Adilo Duarte of Restoration Specialists.

A couple of residents who spend the night out of their homes expressed frustration over the incident.

"Last night we were a little aggravated. We'd love to know who it was," said one.

"Anyone who knows who lives here, knows you're supposed to go through the loading dock. That's why we have a loading dock," said another resident.
