Toucher & Rich With Peter Abraham: Sox Ink Draft Picks At Deadline

The Red Sox dropped to games while out in Seattle and are now tied with the Yankees again for first place. The Sox are back home today for a double header with the Rays.

Peter Abraham spoke with Toucher & Rich about the Sox signing their draft picks before the midnight deadline, Erik Bedard start tonight, the latest on Clay Buccholz and J.D. Drew.

The Sox signed their four first-round draft picks last night before the deadline. How much money did they spend signing all these kids?

"About $6 million for the first four guys, $8 million overall with all those guys that they signed. Convinced a bunch of kids not to go to college, that was the big event of the night," Abraham said.

The guys discussed the signing of catcher Blake Swihart, their second pick in the first round. Swihart received a $2.5 million bonus, only 2 other players in franchise history got more coming out of the draft. How long do the Sox think it will be until he's ready to contribute to the club?

They also went on to talk about Bedard's start tonight. He wasn't able to get any rehab starts since coming off the DL. Is he back to 100 percent?

The guys also discussed the report that Clay Buchholz might be coming back to pitch in the bullpen. Does Abraham see this happening?

"Probably not happening. He's to a point now where he hasn't even thrown off a mound I think we're going on a month. He hasn't pitched in a game in 2 months and he said the other day when we were talking to him in Seattle that he's at least a couple of weeks away from throwing just on the side," were Abraham's thoughts on the matter.

That and so much more with Peter Abraham.
