Felger & Mazz: Who Is The Greatest Athlete Of All Time?

As Felger and Massarotti rolled into the third hour of Monday's show, they continued with one of the day's more popular discussions, and debated which players deserve to be in the conversation as the greatest athletes of all time. While there were many names that were considered, the conversation ultimately came down to Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson, who rose above the crowd for their ability to transcend across sports and perform at a high level on both the gridiron and the baseball diamond.

Although the case for both players is strong, in some ways they are difficult to compare because of the differing strengths they each possessed, and the differing areas in which they each excelled. However, regardless of which player might ultimately be considered "better," it nonetheless remains clear that this kind of transcendent athlete is becoming increasingly rare, and in many ways doesn't even exist in today's highly specialized sports landscape.

While Deion Sanders remains in a class all his own as the only athlete in history to play two professional games on the same day, Tony and Mike can't help but wonder if we'll be lucky enough to experience other once in a generation players like Sanders and Jackson. Could this type of player even exist in today's game, or are organizations today less willing to accept this type type of crossover and develop these multi-sport stars?
Many contemporary stars like Carl Crawford who had multi-sport potential early in their lives were forced to choose a sport as they moved on in their development. Would the same have happened to Sanders or Jackson if they came up today? And, given the rare ability they displayed, even if they had managed to continue with more than one sport, would they have been evaluated and regarded differently if they were thriving within the modern landscape of PEDs and questionable athlete behavior?

For answers to these questions and more, and to hear a rare disagreement between Felger and regular caller Mike in Attleboro, tune in and listen right now!
