'Pirates' Accused Of Breaking Into Boat Off Gloucester

GLOUCESTER (CBS) - Two men flying a pirate flag are accused of lurking around Gloucester Harbor looking for treasure.

Gloucester police say Scott Stanton and Steven Jette pulled up alongside a sailboat Thursday night. Stanton allegedly boarded the boat and awoke the owner Douglas Campbell.

When Campbell confronted Stanton he jumped back onto Jette's boat and prosecutors say Jette made a couple threats before the pair took off.

WBZ-TV's Alana Gomez reports

"We've got a gun if you come any closer we will use it. If you follow us we will come back and get you."

The victim did not heed their warnings and called authorities. He gave them a clear description of the suspects and the boat: a 20 footer flying a black flag with a skull and crossbones.

The Coast Guard said they caught the same boat on camera after the incident using a flashlight to look into other boats.

Police found them in Smith's Cove where they were promptly arrested. Authorities did not find a weapon.

Stanton and Jette appeared in Gloucester District court Friday afternoon for their arraignment. Both men are charged with breaking and entering at night with the intent to commit a felony. Jette is also charged with making threats.

Jette was released on personal recognizance. Stanton must spend the weekend in jail because of an outstanding warrant in Salem.
