WALTHAM (CBS) - The Medal of Honor that was awarded to a soldier from Boston has been put on permanent display at the National Archives in Waltham.

Private First Class Frederick Murphy was shot in the closing days of World War II.

Murphy's daughter, Susan Murphy Campbell, donated the medal in a ceremony Wednesday morning.

Instead of attending to his own wound, Murphy helped others who were taking on gunfire. He lost his foot, and eventually his life to landmines while rescuing others on the battlefield.

The Citation reads, "With indomitable courage and unquestionable spirit of self-sacrifice and supreme devotion to duty which made it possible for him to continue performing his tasks while barely able to move, Private Murphy served many of his fellow soldiers at the cost of his own life."

The National Archives facility was named for PFC Murphy in 1994 and recently updated their exhibit honoring him and his service to our Country.
