Bear Sighting Has Attleboro Residents Talking

ATTLEBORO (CBS) - Neighbors in Attleboro are buzzing about a black bear sighting.

Police received a bunch of calls around 7:30 Sunday night from people saying they saw the bear in the area of Lamb and Marjorie Streets.

The male bear, which appeared to weigh more than 100 pounds, eventually climbed up a tree on Lake Shore Drive.

Environmental police showed up with a tranquilizer gun in case the bear decided to try and cause any problems.

The bear eventually jumped from the tree and took off.

Attleboro police say there's no need for the public to worry.

"I've been advised that there is no immediate threat to the residents. The bear simply wants to go back into the wooded area and be left alone," said Acting Police Chief Kyle Heagney. "It's not agressive, it was very passive. So we don't deem any immediate danger or threat to those citizens."

While bear sightings are not typical in the Attleboro area, there have been a few documented in the area in the past couple of years.
