Boston Police Officer, 2 Others Shot In Dorchester

BOSTON (CBS) - A Boston police officer and two others were wounded in a shooting in Dorchester Tuesday morning.

Officers were called to a home on Dunbar Avenue just before 7 a.m. for a domestic disturbance.

A woman told police her boyfriend had hit her, he had a gun and threatened to kill her.

When police arrived they say 25-year-old Tyrone Cummings was outside arguing with the woman's sister and began firing when he saw the officers.

46-year-old officer Sean Marando was hit in the leg.

WBZ-TV's Diana Perez reports.

He and another officer fired back. Cummings was shot several times. The woman's sister was wounded in the leg, but is expected to be OK.

Marando was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he had surgery to stop the bleeding in his leg. His injuries are not life-threatening.

Cummings is stable at Boston Medical Center. Investigators say he had two illegal firearms with him and bag of bullets.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Bernice Corpuz reports.

Cummings is charged with assault with intent to murder. He also faces domestic violence and weapons charges. He could be arraigned from his hospital bed on Wednesday.

The shooting scene is located between two schools.  One bullet fragment was found in the basement of the Fifield Elementary School. No one was hurt. The shooting happened about two hours before the school opened.

It's still not clear how many shots were fired.

Marando, who is married, has been on the force 13 years. He's also a combat veteran of the U.S. Military. Police say he had never fired his weapon on the job before Tuesday's shooting.
