Police Investigating Origin Of 2 Bottle Bombs Found In Mendon

MENDON (CBS) – Police are searching for suspects after two homemade bombs recently were found in Mendon.

Darren Johnson, who works at Alicante Restaurant in Mendon, said he heard the loud explosion from a homemade bottle bomb.

The bottle was tossed from a car heading east on Route 16.

WBZ-TV's Jim Smith reports.

"I picked it up and it was hot liquid inside with little pellets, and he wanted me to throw it out quick. He's like, 'You don't know what that is, you better throw it out.' So, we came over here. We threw it in to the basket here immediately. Probably about two steps away from it and it went off," said Johnson. "It was like throwing an M-80."

Mendon Police said there were two bombs in all. The other one was left in the driveway of a home on Park Street.

Johnson said he's lucky he wasn't seriously hurt.

"After we threw it in there it sizzled for quite a while. I'm sure the chemicals would have probably given a pretty good burn. The explosion might have damaged some fingers. It might've even taken one off," said Johnson.

Officials are searching for a gold-colored Honda Accord.

Investigators are now offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 1-800-682-9229.
