Wounded N.H. Soldier Back Home

SALEM, N.H. (CBS) -- A soldier from Salem, N.H. is back home less than a year after he was severely injured by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan.

Doctors told Sgt. Arthur Barnes he would never walk again, but his determination has proved everyone wrong.

"It kind of sunk in that nobody really thought I was going to get back up and walk again," he said.

It was July 2010 when the 31-year-old was injured by an IED.

WBZ-TV's Sera Congi reports.

His father, Arthur Barnes, rushed to Walter Reed in Washington to be by his son's side. At first it wasn't clear his son would survive, never mind walk again.

"It's amazing. It's really a miracle," said the senior Barnes.

Sgt. Barnes says his inspiration was his children. He goes to physical therapy and hope to eventually get a degree in teaching. Barnes is still not 100 percent, and may never be, but he's doing far better than anyone expected.

"You find something to hold onto, and you keep going," he said.
