LYNN (CBS) – Police said a man they shot early Sunday morning outside a Lynn home is expected to survive.

Police initially responded to a 911 call at the home on Linwood Street for a man threatening to kill himself. When officers arrived on the scene, they said they were confronted by 25-year-old Mathieu Michaud, who was carrying three knives and a gun.

After identifying themselves and ordering Michaud to drop his weapons, police shot him once. He was then transported to Mass. General Hospital and underwent surgery.

Police said the officers involved were placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

When the Police are called to prevent a suicide why do they more often end up shooting or killing the person whose sucicide they were sent to prevent?
Isn’t it time to look at better ways to handle such calls?
The Police are obviously not qualified to answer such calls.
Wouldn’t it be better to handle it as the Medical emergency that it is and dispatch trained Medical people that would have more understanding and sensitivity than the Police?

      you are an idiot.

      1. Cynic says:

timma… that may well be but my questions remain.

      2. cjwow says:

cynic you clearly didn’t think your statement through. if a therapist had showed up and the potential sucide victim had shot the therapist what would your comment be then???

    2. lynner79 says:

Coundn’t agree more, you’re an idiot Cynic.

    3. joe says:

you uneducated moron. all of your post on this site are laughable.

    4. Matt says:

It’s called suicide by cop. This is when a person wants to kill them self but does not have the guts to do it them self. If he wants to die then we should let them. Good bye now, and free up some space for the rest of us.

  2. Cynic says:

Idiot… Moron…. Uneducated….. Am I to take it that you people disagree?

  3. taxedout says:

Next time something like this happens well give You a call Cynic!!!!

  4. Cynic says:

For years the Police were of the opinion that Alcholism was best treated by the club and when public drunkeness was a crime thats exactly how it was handled. It took years before the legislature was convinced by more humane people to see the necessity of a better way and the Protective Custody laws came into effect.
Hopefully it won’t take as long to come to the conclusion that the way of handeling these situations just isn’t working and a better way must be found.
Hopefully all that so violently attack me for holding the opinion that I do on this subject all have families immune to Mental Illness.
The rest of us are not so fortunate.

    1. blackbear1 says:

Cynic, just give it up. You know nothing of Police procedures or Public Safety. People are attacking you because of your unfounded, foolish, anti police statements. You seem to think everything you say is “slam dunk” correct. Well, sorry, not so.

  5. junior says:

The man was armed to the hilt. The cops had to do what they had to do. An idea though… could they use same kind of tranquilizing gun like they do with wild animals?

    1. Ugh says:

Not such a bad idea. At least someone on this thread is thinking instead of namecalling.

    2. dan says:

junior, that is not a bad is better than tazing because you don”t have get close

  6. sg says:

hey cynic…they need to go and put you to sleep

  7. Bill says:

I knew Matt 7 years ago. Police officers most often, nearly 100% of the time do the right thing even when difficult. Sure there is the less than 1%… Matt had guns and a knife. Prefer he got shot than a police officer. Nice Job Lynn police! Nobody died!

  8. Allen says:

While everyone is arguing about police procedure, I see a different story.

I see a troubled man making a desperate cry for help. I see a young child, through no fault of its own, having his/her life changed forever.

    What’s really important?

  9. tom says:

so you want to put fire or outher in the line of fire of this nut

  10. jzsmith1965 says:

In a perfect world I cop would never ever have to shoot an armed person but we do not live in a perfect world and cops do not have tranquilizing guns its unfortunate he got shot but he should have not been waving guns at the cops

  11. Ebvette says:

The problem with using a tranquilizer is the drug effects people in different ways and usually does not put a person down immediately. If hit with a drug a person still has several minutes which, if armed, could result in taking theirs or somebody elses life. Quasar works the best, but a person under such distress usually keeps their distance or uses a barrier to protect themselves.

Police proceedure remains to protect first the persons life, if this person becomes aggressive or threatening, it is the police duty to isolate the threat by use of force. NOT DEADLY force if it can be prevented.

Police have HOURS of training, but an armed person changes the entire gameplan. Remember the police would like to go home to their families also.

  12. DrStrangelove says:

Waving weapons, threatening lives including his own… and you want to tranquilize him? What… so when he wakes up he can kill his kid, or wife, or neighbor? Put him down.

  13. Lianne Belkas says:

How easy it is to sit in judgement of this man and these police. There, but for the grace of God, go I.
Firstly, you do not know the whole story or choose to overlook facts and details.
Secondly, you sit at your keyboards hidden by anonymity and spout negativity and hurtful inuendo while others actually go into the real world to serve, to love, to protect and to work for peace, harmony and a better life for ALL.
I do not have the answers but I do have compassion.
Why do you think that a mediator is sent in a hostage situations? Would Mathieu have had a better chance if he had chosen to involve other innocent people instead of just himself?
Today, his family wonders if this incident will result in paralysis. Today, an officer of the law has to deal with the fact that he shot another human being. Today, I read hateful propoganda spewed by brothers and sisters ignorant of the truth.
May God have mercy on us ALL.

  14. Lynner says:

Matt is and always has been an immature and violent punk. Don’t show up to a gunfight with a knife. He’s had this coming to him for a long time. His poor child and family.

  15. DrStrangelove says:

Hey, Lianne. Maybe he can live next door to you… or upstairs from you, or downstairs from you. Poor misunderstood jailbird. Feed him, nurture him, lend him some new steak knives for Crime Scene #2…

  16. Lianne Belkas says:

Well, I am sure that I would be a better neighbor than someone who wants to “put him down” or thinks that “he has had it coming for a long time”.
You make accusations that I can only compare with the mindset of Hitler…kill those that are not up to what YOU JUDGE acceptable.
You are a coward hiding behind your alias and spouting hatred. You should be thankful that it isn’t illegal to be ignorant!

  17. DrStrangelove says:

Hitler… Hahaha, that’s funny. YOU’RE the one who wants to let killers loose in the streets. I think that’s ignorant. Drinking your liberal koolaid again, I see. You and John Kerry – Pillars of the oppressed… as long as it’s not in your front yard. Lianne, you can spin it any way you want, but you’re a liar if you’re telling us you’ll let Matthieu rehab in your house with you and your kiddos. That’s what true ethnic cleansing is — NOT IN YOUR HOUSE but maybe in mine. I think not.

  18. Lianne Belkas says:

With history as we know it, I would much rather have my thoughts and opinions likened to John Kerry than Adolph Hitler; so, thank you for the unintended compliment.
Yes, I would be willing to help Matt in any way I can. (I only wish he were willing to accept it). I do not fear him and know he has no intention of harming anyone but himself.
I am more fearful of people, like you, who make uninformed and rash judgements that turn a sick, sad, scared & suffering individual into a “killer”. This confirms my assumption that you must be a paranoid and delusional person who needs to hide in the anonymous world of cyberspace. Why not take you head out of the sand and join the rest of us in the real world?
This is the last respnse I will make to you regarding this topic as I refuse to match wits with an unworthy and unreasonable adversary. (Feel free to get in your last licks).
    My prayers are with you.

  19. DrStrangelove says:

Hahaha – Hitler AND the Bible! You forgot to throw the race card. You must be white. Thanks for the laughs. With views like your, L, there must be many, many rainbows and gumdrops in your world. If only you could match wits, we might be able to continue this, but alas, like your opinions, this story is OLD. By the way, this isn’t a lick, but you’re welcome to tend to your wounds any way you see fit.

  20. fiona says:

    Dr Strangelove
I am worried about what type of individual you are. Perhaps your a killer!
