Bruins Thornton Up For Masterton Throphy

BOSTON (CBS) - Bruins forward Shawn Thornton has been nominated for the 2011 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, given to the NHL player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to the game of hockey.

Thornton is having a career year for the Bruins, setting a career high with nine goals and 18 points. A physical leader on the ice, Thornton also leads Boston with 122 penalty minutes.

Before winning a Stanley Cup with the Anahiem Ducks in 2007, Thornton fought for nine seasons to earn a full-time role with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks. Since joining Boston, Thornton has been a fan and locker-room favorite for his hard-nosed play and leadership.

The forward is also extremely active in the community, heading Thursday's "Cuts For A Cause" with 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher and Rich. Fans will have the chance to shave Thornton and other Bruins' heads to benefit the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center.

The winner of the Masteron is selected by a vote of the 30 chapters of the Pro Hockey Writers Association at the conclusion of the regular season. The winner will be announced at the NHL Awards, held on Wednesday, June 22 in Las Vegas.
