Car Insurance Companies Top Consumer Complaints List

BOSTON (CBS) - Consumer and business leaders outlined the top five consumer complaints in Massachusetts Wednesday.

The state gets about 50,000 calls every year.

Among the leading complaints, more than 7,000 consumers have called to take issue with claim denials and delays from car insurance companies.

Others gripe about health insurance, particularly coordinating benefits and problems with COBRA.

Also near the top of the state's list, many consumers say they have run into shady home improvement contractors.

Massachusetts' Lemon Law is one of the strictest in the country when it comes to new and used cars. Naturally, the number of inquiries is in the thousands each year.

  1. Car Insurance Companies
  2. Health Insurers
  3. Home Improvement Contractors
  4. Auto Lemon Law
  5. Phone Companies

David Monahan from the Attorney General's office warns just how important it is for consumers to be smart shoppers, saying there is "no shortage of people trying to take advantage."

But, Monahan also wants to remind consumers that if they are taken advantage of, there are resources available to take on businesses.

Other agencies like the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau identified other complaints they have seen from consumers, including foreclosure rescue schemes and identity theft.
