State Police Trooper Shoots, Kills Drug Suspect In Ashby

ASHBY (CBS) -- A state police trooper shot and killed a suspected drug dealer in Ashby Tuesday afternoon.

State police say the trooper had no other option, because the suspect was driving his car toward the trooper.

It happened at about 1 p.m. Tuesday when an undercover gang unit trooper was keeping an eye on a car.

As he attempted to stop the car a short chase ensued, but the driver of the suspected vehicle went down a one-way road that ended in a cul-de-sac. That's when confrontation between trooper and suspect occurred.

WBZ-TV's Bill Shields reports.

"I heard a couple of siren chirps coming down the road, and I walked out back and saw two cars go flying up the road. Maybe a minute or so later a couple of pop pop and that was it," said one man who lives in the neighborhood.

State police explain when the cars ended up in the cul-de-sac the trooper got out of his car and ordered the man to do the same, but he accelerated toward the trooper.

"The suspect ignored repeated commands to exit his vehicle," said David Procopio, a spokesperson for state police. "At one point during that confrontation the suspect drove toward the trooper, putting the trooper in fear for his own life. The trooper discharged his service weapon. As a result of that discharge the suspect was struck and killed."

The suspect has been identified as Roger Reyes Padilla, 21, of Fitchburg. The trooper has not been identified. Authorities investigating the shooting say they found drugs at the scene.

Another resident in the quiet neighborhood said drug dealers have found it to be the perfect place for them to do their work.

"A lot of drug traffic," said Melissa Williams. "It's ridiculous." Trooper was taken to an area hospital, but is expected to be fine.

Neither the name of the trooper or the suspect have been released.
