Two Police Detectives Hurt After Teen Driver Plows Into Undercover Car

LOWELL (CBS) – Two Lowell detectives were hurt Thursday afternoon when a teen driver blew through a red light and broadsided their undercover police car.

Police say the unidentified detectives were traveling east on Westford Street when the teen, a 16-year-old boy, collided with the undercover car at the intersection of Pine Street.

The detectives are being treated at a local hospital, but there is no word on their current condition.  Both officers work in the Lowell Police Special Investigations department, which mainly investigates crimes related to illegal narcotics and vice.

The teen holds a "junior operator's license", and was cited for failing to stop at a red light.  Emergency responders did not treat the teen for any injuries on scene.

Police continue to investigate the crash.
