N.H. Parrot Owner Caught In Legal Flap

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - A New Hampshire woman has lost her battle to keep her Quaker parrots in the state, which are banned because of their nesting habits.

Fish and Game Department officials say, though, that they will help Suzanne Burke of Nashua relocate her nearly 20 birds. She was given a 30-day deadline.

Burke had been breeding the parrots for years and was not aware that the state had banned the bird because of its nesting behavior in other states. The Concord Monitor reports the parrots nest in power lines, sometimes causing fires.

The birds also have been sold in pet shops in the state.

State Rep. Jeanine Notter of Merrimack said she plans to push for legislation to repeal the 12-year-old Fish and Game law, to make ownership of the birds legal.
