Heavy Snow Crushes Hopkinton Horse Barn Roof

HOPKINTON (CBS) – For the third time this week, a roof has collapsed under heavy snow in Hopkinton.

The owners of the Maple Knoll Farm on Fruit Street woke up Friday morning and found out their horse barn, which was built in the 1800's, had collapsed.

Two horses were inside, but they were safe.

"The horses were actually located in the basement and the basement was pretty heavy timber and very structurally sound so once we had good access we were able to get in there," Hopkinton Deputy Fire Chief Steve Slaman told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

"The horses were calm. At that point, we were able to open up the bays and allow them to come out."

Slaman said there's growing concern for other places in town.

"We're right on the edge here. We've had one other commercial building fail, a garage that had failed and so this is the third one that I know of."

Slaman says their building department is working with home and business owners who fear their roof could be next.
