BOSTON (CBS) — The I-Team paid more than $80 for just one pizza when they ordered from a Boston pizzeria accused of overcharging the credit cards of late night customers.

The I-Team has learned the Attorney General’s office has received a number of complaints from customers saying they were unhappy with the way the Regal Café and Pizzeria does business. 

Regal promises to deliver 24 hours a day throughout the metropolitan area.


Steve just wanted a pizza when he placed an order with Regal.  He found Regal after doing a Google search for late night delivery. 

But he got quite a bit more than one pizza.  He said the delivery guy gave him “. . . a ton of food.  Chicken wings, French fries, soda, cheesecake, salad, and I said, ‘I didn’t order this’ and he said, ‘Our boss just got married  and he was giving out free food, so to just take it’.  And he said sign for it, and I asked for a receipt, and he wouldn’t give me a receipt.”

The next day, Steve checked his credit card balance on line.  “The bill was $69 for the large cheese pizza, and two days later, came an 18 percent, or $12 gratuity fee, so it was an $81 pizza.”


Samuel also placed an order with Regal. He says he was misled when he ordered a pizza, a soda, and a side of fries.  The bill came to $65.20. 

Samuel called to complain and says he was told, “Your order is final and we’ve already got your credit card number.”


After hearing these complaints the I-Team decided to place a late night order for a large cheese pizza.  We asked several times how much it would be to have it delivered to an Allston apartment, but couldn’t get a straight answer.

Our producer was told the pizza would cost $12.95 and that there would be a delivery charge.  That amount would be determined by their computer and we were told we would be notified by the delivery person.

The driver showed up with a large number of items, including the pizza, mozzarella sticks, fries, salad, cheesecake and soda.  When told that we hadn’t ordered anything but the pizza, the driver said the food was “left over from Halloween” and a “free promotion.”

At first the driver would not provide a receipt.  He then gave the I-Team producer a blank receipt with no corporate identification.  When pressed for an amount, the driver quickly wrote in $18.50.

Two days later, our credit card statement told a much different story.  There were two charges from the Regal totally $81.90, exactly the same as Steve was charged.


Steve says there is no question in his mind that he was ripped off.  “It is a complete scandal, a scam,” he said.

The ownership of the Regal said they would do an interview explaining these business practices, but didn’t show up at the agreed upon time. 

On the phone, the owner said their website indicates a minimum number of items must be ordered late at night.  When we started this investigation there was nothing on the website about a minimum charge, however.  That has now changed as a result of inquiries.

None of these requirements are revealed to people who just call in to make a simple order like having a pizza delivered. 

Samuel said he just wanted one pizza and never saw any menu.  Steve said, “They should come clean with you on the phone and say, ‘Here is the fee, do you still want it?’ But they wouldn’t give me a total on the phone or in person.”


Regal’s reputation is taking a big hit on the Internet.  One customer after another says they got ripped off with bogus charges showing up on their credit card statements.

Consumer Advocate Edgar Dworsky, who was once an Assistant Attorney General, says Regal Café could be committing credit card fraud.

“If you get merchandise that you didn’t order, orally or in writing, it is yours to keep for free as a gift,” he said.


Under the Attorney General’s regulations, he added, “There’s an affirmative obligation to disclose the prices of services before the service is rendered, not after the fact.”

The owner of the Regal also said he is protecting his drivers by not having them carry cash late at night.  That does not explain, however, why such large charges are put through without customers being told.

The Attorney General’s office tells the I-team it would like to hear from anyone who thinks they got scammed by the Regal Café.  You can call the office at 617-727-8400.

    Clearly there is sketchiness going on at this place and the news is just the first public tv broadcast.

    Nick at Regal Cafe has been a long time friend to us here in the black community. His food and service is great. The man just requires a few things to be ordered for the late night delivery, what do you expect at 3am in the morning. This is just another devious plan to destroy A good business here in our community. Nick is our Greek friend. We will always continue to give Nick our business WBZ can say all the lies it wants, but here in Mattapan , Regal is the place to go. Were all behind you Nick.

    I’m a long time customer of regal 24 hour delivery. In fact I went on his website tonight to see what I want and saw that regal was awarded 2010 USCA best of Boston award. They specify that I must order 2 items a side order cakes and drinks. They bring my food nice and hot and I live 28 miles from Boston. So 69.90 is cheap for a 2 o’clock delivery 28 miles away and a 12 dollar tip for the driver. CHannel 4 news is lying about this place. They didn’t even show the order being taken by the phone guy at the shop. They always explAin what I need to order for delivery. I suggest that channel 4 does a retraction of the story because they lied and manipulated the whole story. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone except the cheapskates who want something for nothing. Keep up the good work regal. Keep making those awesome calzones.

    The news isn’t lying. It’s obvious Regal and it’s employees are posting on here trying to defend their business. And I don’t think anyone expects to pay $81 for a pizza no matter how late it is. It’s a complete scam and I will tell everyone I know not to order from there. I’m posting this article on my facebook page right now. If a business can’t be honest and play by the rules they don’t deserve to be in business anymore. BTW, the pizza isn’t that great to begin with, I’ve had better…

    I am from Dorchester, and Regals has always been well known for scamming people. I’m glad the media was able to report this, and hopefully Boston eliminates the people and scams that give these neighborhoods a bad name.

    It’s truly amazing that some of these comments came in on the same day around the same time. That too wreaks of sketchy! Its sad how true this is, no pizza (be it 3am, or 40 miles away) is worth false information. I’d prefer to walk to a local 7/11 and spend $50 on snacks. They are committing a crime and it needs to be exposed. If I’m giving you a credit card for $22 there is no risk to your drivers. You’ve been paid, but what’s the extra $60 dollars for? This has nothing to do with race or good citizen, crime has no color, nor does a credit card receipt!

    If this is true then why didn’t the AG’s office pull multiple stings? The condoning comments look suspicious as if they were planted by them or employees. How many idiots wouldl pay $60+/- for a delivery or gratuity charge for a pizza? Get real.

    This is completely true. My pizza was cold, as were the fries and mozzarella sticks i didn’t order.

    I was charged $70 and I only ordered a large pizza.

    This place needs to be shut down.

    Looks like Regal’s employees have been busy posting positive things about their scam on here.

    Unfortunately for them if they go to court it’s not hard to find out that all these different names posting positive comments are from the same one or two IP addresses.

    I hope they go to jail. Never been scammed like that before.

    Shut down Regal Pizza.

    I was also scammed by this place. It seems all they do is charge people’s credit cards, deliver bad/cold/unordered food, and post positive comments about themselves online. These people SHOULD go to jail. I can’t believe they haven’t been shut down yet!

    Oh look, a slew of comments from people defending the business and claiming that the attackers are either racist or xenophobic. And look, they all just HAPPEN to know the owner by name. Ridiculous.

    People need to learn how to contest charges on their credit card. You can pretty much always get the money back. The merchant will have to provide a signed receipt for that amount, which they won’t be able to do. Also, people need to learn not to sign receipts that don’t have amounts on them.

    I was visiting Boston 2 weeks ago and ordered a single Large Pizza from Regals late one night. Upon asking for the sum total, the man on the phone became very disgruntled that I was asking, to which he gave me a fictional total and said “Is there anything you want to know?”.
    Upon delivery I received the Pizza….sodas…chicken fingers…and cheesecake, all complimentary upon the restaurant. Little did I know it was complimentary because they were stealing my Credit Card number and about to charge me over $90.
    The next morning my Bank alerted me of the 2 fraudulent charges, to which I had to then close my card and report the charges.

    REGALS PIZZA IS A SCAM – Do your research on YELP first. This place is nothing but bad news..and the food is horrible on top of it all!

    Big shock they’re claiming they won an award for Best In Boston by US Commerce Association – that “award” is a scam, too. Look it up, you’ll love it. Your company gets a random e-mail that you’ve won and then you have to pay a fee in order collect your ‘prize.’ Pretty funny these crooks got scammed themselves.

    I also was ripped off by regal pizza. I work the night shift at Boston Medical Center .We wanted to place a small order on the menu we had on file did not mention anything regarding a minimum charge. We had ordered chix fingers and a small dessert, he kept asking do you want a pizza, how about a drink? I agreeed to a drink he said no cash. Credit card only.. I gave my info before I could ask for the total he hung up. When the order arrived there was all kinds of food we did not order. He handed me a bill for 59.90 I told him I could not accept the food for this much money.I asked to speak to the manager he called him from the cell phone he was rude and told me there was no refunds once the food was prepared and my card had already been charged. I felt ripped off and helpless.I hope something is done about this scammer..

    Happened to us, too. Ordered a pizza to be delivered to a hotel room in Waltham. They brought a big order of chicken, 2 litres of soda, and 2 pieces of cheesecake. Oh, and a lousy pizza. They said it was extra food they had in the truck. When the charge came in to the bank, it was a $69.00 pizza. I reported them to my bank and had the charge removed. Freaking scammers.

    This happened to my friends and I this weekend. Thank you for reporting an honest story. We were charged $70 for a pizza, and when asked for a receipt, the delivery guy refused to give us one. We also asked for the total cost of our order and were once again denied. We woke up the next day only to find out that we had been charged an additional $79.00 FOR A TIP that we never signed for – a tip more than the actual order itself. And, to boot, the pizza we got was about 3 weeks old.
