State's Chief Justice To Delay Retirement
BOSTON (AP) - Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Margaret Marshall has agreed to delay her retirement until a nominee to the court is confirmed.
SJC spokeswoman Joan Kenney said Marshall - who had planned to retire at the end of this month - agreed to a request from Governor Deval Patrick to stay.
Marshall announced her retirement in July, saying she wanted to spend more time with her husband - former New York times columnist Anthony Lewis - who has Parkinson's Disease.
Patrick has delayed announcing his choice for the high court until after the gubernatorial election next week.
Marshall was first appointed to the bench in 1996 and became chief justice three years later. She wrote the state's landmark ruling legalizing gay marriage.
