Mother of Rhode Island Candidate For Governor Dies

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The mother of Rhode Island gubernatorial candidate Ken Block has died after a seven-year fight with Alzheimer's disease.

Block said in a statement that his mother, Janet, died Friday morning. She had been living in a nursing home in Providence.

Block formed the state's new Moderate Party and is running in Tuesday's election as its first gubernatorial candidate. He said his mother taught him to finish what he started, so he'll continue his campaign, although he will cut down on some events.

He faces independent Lincoln Chafee, Democrat Frank Caprio and Republican John Robitaille in the race to succeed term-limited Republican Gov. Don Carcieri.
