BOSTON (AP) -- A local group says it is assembling investors to make a bid to purchase The Boston Globe from its parent company, The New York Times Co.

In a statement Wednesday, The 2100 Trust, a Massachusetts-based limited liability firm, said it wanted to make a "significant long-term investment" in the newspaper.

The group is led by Aaron Kushner of Wellesley, who did not immediately return a message.

The group has not yet submitted a letter of intent to buy the New England Media Group, which also includes the Telegram & Gazette of Worcester.

A Times Co. spokeswoman said the company would not comment on "rumors" of acquisitions.

Times Co. entertained offers for the Globe last year, but took the newspaper off the market after determining that its finances had stabilized.
