Sen. Brown blasts Harvard's lingering ROTC ban
Sen. Scott Brown is blasting Harvard's decision to maintain its ban against ROTC recruiting until Congress repeals a ban on gays serving openly in the military.
The Massachusetts Republican said in a statement Thursday the university "has its priorities upside down."
He complains it supports legislation granting legal status to illegal immigrants attending college, yet opposes ROTC on campus.
Brown says Harvard "should embrace young people who want to serve their country."
Harvard expelled its Reserve Officers' Training Corps program in 1969 amid Vietnam War protests, and says it continues the policy because it bans discrimination by all undergraduate groups. Harvard students take part in MIT's ROTC program.
University President Drew Gilpin Faust tells The Boston Globe restoring ROTC is "entirely linked" to repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Congress rejected a repeal Wednesday.
