Fall River Marine drowns

Funeral services are being planned for a Massachusetts Marine who drowned with two comrades at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base.

The U.S. Navy says 29-year-old Cpl. Paul Fagundes of Fall River drowned July 4 with two other Marines as they swam at a beach on base.

Fagundes and the other Marines, Lcpl. Giovani Cruz and Lcpl. James May Jr., were part of an anti-terrorism team based in Norfolk, Va. The team is training at Guantanamo and guarding the fence separating the base from Cuba.

Fagundes was married and has a son, and his wife is pregnant with their daughter. His body was being returned to Fall River over the weekend, with a wake scheduled Monday and funeral services Tuesday.
