Stow woman charged with stealing from Boy Scouts

A former high-ranking town official in Stow has been charged with stealing more than $20,000 from a local Boy Scout troop she served as treasurer.

The Middlesex district attorney's office says former Selectwoman Carole Makary was indicted Thursday on charges of three counts of larceny from a voluntary organization of more than $250 and making false entries in corporate books. She is scheduled to be arraigned July 22.

Authorities tells The MetroWest Daily News that between 2004 and 2008 Makary wrote numerous $1,000 checks from the troop's account and deposited them in her personal bank account. She replaced some, but not all the money.

When she stepped down as treasurer, she allegedly tried to dispose of records.

Her lawyer did not return calls for comment.
